In Detroit yesterday, control of the Detroit Water & Sewage Departement moved back to the mayor’s office. Control had been in the hands of the emergency manager. Under that unelected manager’s control, the city has been plagued by water shutoffs to people who had trouble paying their water bills.
It is now expected that the mayor and city council will implement a water affordability plan that caps household water bills at 3% of the household’s income. This is a great relief to those currently without water or struggling to pay their water bills.
Several organizations teamed together to stop this tragedy from continuing. Water is a human right!
