Remove Fluoride from Water

2 Types of Filter Material

There are a few effective ways to take Fluoride out of your water.  You can use filters containing activated alumina.  Activated alumina is a natural resin.  It is not what we popularly call aluminum, which is a highly processed material.  Fluoride is used in the making of the shiny product called aluminum!  Activated alumina is a highly porous natural resin.  It takes out fluoride by opposite magnetic attraction.  Although fluoride is not a metal, in our water supplies, it travels as part of a metallic compound.  That is attracted to the activated alumina, and it adheres to the surfaces of the activated alumina, thus removing it from the water.

Alternatively, you can use filters that employ calcium-based carbon, aka bone char, to take out fluoride.  Calcium-based carbon, like activated alumina, is a safe filter material to use.  It works differently.  It is optimized to pull fluoride out of the water by absorption.

How Do You Decide?

How do you decide between the two types of filter media?  If you are vegetarian or vegan, you will probably prefer activated alumina, as bone char is an animal product.  Bone char is made by putting it in air up to 1,292 °F (with a low concentration of oxygen).  Or alternatively, in water that is 932 degree Fahrenheit.  Such high heats purify the carbon.

So you select either one!  They both are safe and they both do an excellent job.

How to Remove Fluoride:  Change Filters on Schedule!

Both of these filter materials must be kept “fresh” to be effective.  In the kitchen filters sold here, fluoride cartridges (of both types) should be changed every six months.  (Cartridges for almost every other use should be changed once a year.)

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis filtration will also take out fluoride.  We do not recommend reverse osmosis for many reasons.  These include wasted water.  For more information, please click this link:  Reverse Osmosis.
