Learn more about chloramine.
The technology in these shower filters uses a process-patented disk made of a combination of copper and zinc known as kdf. Our chloramine water filters use kdf 85, which is a variant shown to be more effective on chloramines. This is a great solution available for shower filters, in part because it works in hot water.
All kdf is not equal! Our manufacturing partner has patented the way these disks are made, forming them from powdered kdf into a fixed-form foam. This makes them SEVERAL TIMES more effective than other kdf shower and bath water filters. These water filters reduce chloramine, iron, lead, bacteria, hydrogen sulfide and hundreds of other problem contaminants from your water. The majority of chloramines are filtered. Like chlorine, chloramines can release as fumes into the air and be absorbed through the skin.
Learn more about the Foam Advantage
The copper-zinc kdf 85 disks, the filters in both our TurboShowers also reduce aluminum, mercury, sulfur, and lime scale and many other inorganic compounds. These water filters make your water softer without the use of salt.
Please note, to get accurate test readings for chloramine filtered by kdf, you must sent your water sample to a professional lab with a spectrometer, and tell them that the water has been filtered by kdf. Otherwise you will not get accurate readings.
Keeps Working for a Long Time
These shower filters use the most efficient, longest lasting and lowest maintenance water filter media available. The disks work best because the copper-zinc alloy has no pores that plug up, has no membranes to replace, and remains bacteriostatic (bacteria can't breed). You swap out the water filter disk once a year. The media is non-hazardous, non-corrosive and is recyclable.
The copper-zinc alloy stops the calcium and magnesium from forming hard scale, adhering to your showerhead. Scale is that buildup you see that cakes on and slows flow and pressure. These bath and shower filters also stop scale from building up in your shower and tub. Interestingly, calcium and magnesium are not eliminated, rather they remain soluble in the water, which is natural and healthful. In nature, these minerals are picked up as water filters through rock strata. Excessive salt is reduced a bit, but if you have a water softener that adds salt, you won't see much difference.
Please note that through shipping, some copper-zinc powder sometimes loosens. If this happens, it won't last long. You can soak and rinse them to clear it more quickly. But this won't cause harm to bathers.
There is no maintenance required for the kdf copper-zinc filter, just swap it out the filter disk once a year.

What About Fluoride?
The primary risk of fluoride is from ingestion. It is important that your remove it from your drinking and cooking water.
Fluoride, unlike chloramine, is not released into the water and air as a fume. It travels through water as part of a metallic compound, and therefore doesn't release into the air. As a larger molecule in the water, it cannot be absorbed easily through the skin as with chlorine.
We have heard from a few rare people over the years who have a particular skin sensitivity to fluoride. These seem to be the only ones particularly affected by bathing or showering in fluoridated water.
Be careful about claims of whole house filter systems that remove fluoride at a cost for a few hundred dollars - and last for a long time. THe filter material to remove fluoride is pretty expensive, especially in the quantities needed for whole house filtration. Water filter systems that seem cheap compared to others - are cheap because they won't do the job over time.
We don't know of any shower or bath filters that significantly remove fluoride. These have been tested to remove up to 40%.
If you are determined to remove fluoride and the full range of other contaminants from the whole house, we do have an expensive 3-tank system that will work for 500.000 gallons!
See Whole House Fluoride Plus.
And we have a smaller alternative that employs foam technology that lasts for 80,000 gallons.
